Advocates of the Term

The following chart shows the advocates that have appeared orally and by brief before the Court this term. Much of the scholarship around gender diversity at the Supreme Court focuses on the oral advocates exclusively. While this is crucial because those advocates are more seen and heard, they do not present the full picture. This is particularly crucial because many attorneys have suggested that there is a “pipeline” issue which prevents the Supreme Court oral advocates from achieving more equal representation. By looking at the written advocates as well, however, you can seen that nearly all cases had women written advocates as well who could have orally argued the case. Of course, there are many reasons why certain individuals are selected to orally argue the case over the many others who helped with the briefs, but it simply shows that there are many women advocates capable of arguing before the Supreme Court.

The honorifics assigned were found from Supreme Court transcripts, firm, and organizational websites. In cases when such information was not available, I have reached out to the firm or individual.
